I believe that the best coaches create the kind of environments that help people come awake, get unstuck, and take the kind of action that will move them forward in the pursuit of their goal.
Coaching can be done by anyone at any time -- but the best coaches have mastered the art of unlocking the resourcefulness of those they coach.
Unlocking this resourcefulness starts with a framework that is totally focused on the person being coached. Coaching doesn’t have to take 90 minutes -- rather, it can happen really fast. I mean REALLY fast -- 10 minutes fast!
Using this framework, you can begin coaching anyone with just a few minutes, and a few questions.
FOCUS: What’s on your mind? (And what else?)
CHALLENGE: What is the most challenging part of that?
OUTCOME: What do you want?
REALITY: What have you tried?
OPTIONS: What could you do?
WAY FORWARD: What will you do? And when will you do it?
Coaching really can be this simple.
By providing an environment in which you are totally present and focused on the person you are coaching, you will provide the coachee with an environment that is ripe for transformative change as you extract their unique supply of creativity and resourcefulness.
And as a leader practices these coaching skills with those they lead, they take their leadership to the next level -- and build a legacy that focuses on the growth and success of those around them.
I can’t think of a better legacy to leave!
