We all have emotions, right? Well, so does everyone else that you lead.

How do you handle one of those situations when a friend or colleague or family member gets emotional about something? 

Knowing how to handle this is paramount to building successful relationships. 

As people who both feel emotions and lead other emotional people -- we need techniques to manage emotions better. Improper use of emotion can tear down a great legacy, while properly managing your emotions (and the emotions of others) can be a powerful legacy builder. 

If you are in a situation where you need to help someone deal with their emotions, try these five steps:

  1. Confirm their emotion.

  2. Guage how big their emotion is.

  3. Determine what they need to move forward.

  4. Identify what they would like you to do.

  5. Explore what step they need to take to feel better.
